Local 1858 holds their AGM and Holiday Dinner on the second (2nd) Wednesday of December. Doors open at 4:30, the AGM will be called to order at 5:00, and dinner is served at 6:00. Information on the exact location and the meeting materials will be sent out the week before the AGM.

In odd years, elections will be held for the following positions: President; 2nd Vice-President; Deputy Lead Steward; Executive Member at Large, Indigenous Workers; Executive Member at Large, Racialized Workers; Executive Member at Large, Young Workers; and Recording Secretary.

GM meetings are held on the third (3rd) Wednesday of every month from September to June, alternating start times at Noon (September, November, January, March, May) and 5:00 p.m. (October, February, April). Our Annual General Membership (AGM) meeting is held on the second (2nd) Wednesday of December at 5:00 p.m.

Meeting materials are typically emailed out to the membership the week prior to our GM/AGM meetings.

Due to the planned 50th anniversary event scheduled for Saturday, June 14, this year’s June GM meeting will be a regular hybrid session. We will be electing delegates to represent the Local at the Vancouver Island District Council and Nanaimo and Duncan District Labour Council meetings.

Did you know that Local 1858 was certified in 1975? It’s true! The Local has been supporting Vancouver Island University for 50 years and we want to celebrate our members. There will be good food, great company, games, and fun!

This hybrid meeting’s agenda and supplemental material will hit your email in April. We will provide pizza, we will conduct the business of the union, and a good time will be had by all!

This meeting will be virtual, so find a place to relax and eat your lunch or listen while you walk. The meeting materials will be sent to your VIU email address.

February 18 UPDATE: We will be switching to a fully online meeting for our GM tomorrow, February 19, 2025. Flu season is upon us and we feel this is a safer way to meet at this time. We will still review proposed bylaw changes this month and vote for three executive members.

There will be food, beverages, desserts, Dad jokes, and elections! You do not want to miss this event.
